New Roads Transform UNN Landscape

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka has witnessed massive changes through road constructions which has given the institution a facelift as the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Uchenna Ortuanya embarks on a massive infrastructural project on campus.

Record Newspaper gathered that he flagged off a 4.5km road rehabilitation project and other infrastructures on campus since assuming office. The road project is expected to cover most strategic routes within and beyond the school environment including the stretch leading to the school’s main gate, the Odenigwe road, the axis to the school library, university-Orba road, the roundabout at Freedom Square and many other roads inside the school.

In a flag-off ceremony to commence the rehabilitation of the university-Orba road, Prof. Ortuanya expressed his commitment and readiness to reposition the institution to make her a pride in the continent stressing that it is his determination to clean up the university to make it conducive for everyone.

“Since I resumed office, I assured the university community that it is our determination to reposition the University of Nigeria and make it number one in Africa. In terms of infrastructure, we promised that we were going to clean up our environment; make sure we rehabilitate the roads, reach out and ensure a habitable environment.

“I am happy to say that this is the beginning of our determination to revamp the roads in our university. This is the commencement of activities for a 4.5 kilometer internal road in our university… Therefore to the glory of God and in service of humanity, I flag-off this process of road rehabilitation this 6th day of September, 2025”. Prof. Ortuanya said.

Students on campus shared their joy regarding the ongoing road rehabilitation project in school.

Constance Chinaka, a penultimate year student of pharmacy expressed her joy in the reconstruction project saying that it will ease transportation in and around the university environment stressing that it will give the university a new lift upon completion. She also expressed her confidence in the current vice chancellor who has promised to revamp road infrastructures the school.

“I am in my third year now and this is the time I have experienced massive changes in the school infrastructure-wise. The roads being rehabilitated are long overdue and now that it has come, it will surely ease transportation in the school and give the institution a facelift. Some terrains on campus are danger zones owing to the level of damage in those roads but it will now be a thing of the past following this new development on rods in the school. I express much confidence in the new vice chancellor and I trust his capacity to deliver.” Constance said.

Beyond the road construction, the management has also announced plans for the construction of a new and modern gate at its second main entrance, located along University Road as part of efforts to improve infrastructures on campus. As at the time filing this report, work is ongoing at the school’s second gate.

Prof. Samuel Uchenna Ortuanya who resumed office as the 19th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka on the 11th of August 2025 following the announcement made by the university’s Governing Council has promised to focus on academic excellence, innovation, expanding the school’s global influence and building infrastructural projects of which the ongoing road reconstruction and rehabilitation represents under his leadership.
